Text of the Hadith

Narrated Mu’adh bin Jabal (رضي الله عنه), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: that Allah said ‘Ask’ (for something), so the Messenger (ﷺ) made the following dua and then said “Verily it is true so learn it and teach it.”

Breaking Down the Dua

  1. “O Allah, I ask You to grant me the performance of good deeds”
This opening line is a direct request to Allah for the strength and ability to do what is good. Good deeds are a means of building our relationship with Allah and earning His pleasure. By asking for Allah’s help in this, we’re acknowledging that even our ability to do good comes from Him.
  2. “Abandonment of bad ones”
The second request in this dua is for help in staying away from negative actions. Just as it takes Allah’s guidance to do good, it also requires His protection and strength to avoid falling into wrongdoing. This is a recognition of our human vulnerabilities and a desire to live a life that aligns with righteousness.
  3. “And love of the poor”
This line emphasizes compassion and humility. Loving the poor reflects a deep sense of empathy, generosity, and awareness of our responsibility towards others. When we ask Allah to instill this love in us, we’re asking to see beyond ourselves and to value and care for people who might be overlooked.
  4. “And (I ask You) that You forgive me and have mercy upon me”
Here, the dua takes a deeply personal turn. Seeking Allah’s forgiveness and mercy is one of the most powerful acts of humility. It’s a way of recognizing that we are constantly in need of Allah’s compassion and that no matter how much we try to do good, we depend on His forgiveness and mercy to cover our shortcomings.
  5. “If You intend to try a people, cause me to die without being tested”
This part acknowledges that life is full of tests, but also asks Allah for protection from severe trials. It’s a sensitive request, acknowledging that while we may not know what trials lie ahead, we ask Allah for gentleness in His decree. It’s a way of asking Allah to preserve our faith and protect us from tests that we might not be able to handle.
  6. “And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love you”
This request is the heart of the dua. Asking for Allah’s love is truly the highest goal a believer can have. When we ask Allah for the love of those who love Him, we are also asking to be surrounded by righteous, supportive people who help us stay connected to our faith.
  7. “And the love of actions which draw me closer to Your love”
Finally, this part seeks not only Allah’s love but also a love for the actions that please Him. This keeps us motivated and devoted in our daily lives. Loving what Allah loves strengthens our connection to Him and keeps our intentions pure, guiding us closer to Him through every action we take.
