Is Giraffe Halal or Haram? What You Should Know

Is giraffe halal? Giraffes are majestic creatures that have captured the hearts of many people around the world. They are known for their long necks and spots, and are considered to be one of the tallest mammals on Earth.

But what is less known is whether giraffes are considered halal or haram (permissible or forbidden) for consumption according to Islamic dietary laws.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the issue of whether giraffes are halal and take a look at the different opinions and interpretations of Islamic scholars on the matter.

Is Giraffe Halal?

Yes, giraffe is halal. According to Islam Web, the majority of Muslim scholars are of the opinion that it is lawful since there is no evidence that proves its prohibition.

Dr. Abdul Satar Fathullah Saheed says:

It is permissible to consume giraffe meat after slaughtering it that one owns. This ruling stands because there is no general or specific proof that prohibits its consumption.

Furthermore, there is no saying attributed to a scholar who forbade its meat, so it is halal and permissible. For indeed, the basis in everything is permissibility until we affirm its prohibition.

Allah, the most high, has said:

Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Quran, Surah Al An’am:145

The messenger of Allah, (SAW), has laid down regulation in what are prohibited among the birds and animals.

It is also narrated from the Prophet that he prohibited anything that posses canine among the predators.

Also whatever possesses claws among the birds. A giraffe doesn’t have a canine, and it is not a predator, neither eating its meat will result in discomfort because it feeds on grass.

It is then lawful because any animal that habitually feeds on grass is lawful (halal).

An exception to this ruling, is the animals that shariah text specifies unlawful such as domestic donkeys which the prophet (SAW) forbade eating its meat on the day of Khaybar despite it feeds on grass.

Allah has subdued all what is in the sky and all what’s on the earth for us for our benefit.

Allah, the most high, says:

And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth – all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for people who give thought.

Surah Al Jathiya verse 13
