The Meaning and Purpose Behind This Dua
- “In the Name of Allah”
Starting with “Bismillah” (In the Name of Allah) aligns our actions with a sense of purpose and blessing. Saying “Bismillah” is a way of seeking Allah’s assistance and starting this private moment with His name, recognizing that every good thing ultimately comes from Him. - “O Allah! Shield us from Satan and keep him away from us and from what You [may] bestow upon us [i.e., children]”
This part of the dua is an appeal for protection. We’re asking Allah to safeguard us from any interference from Satan, both in our relationship and in the potential of children who may come from this union. It’s a reminder that Satan often seeks to disrupt peace and harmony, and by reciting this dua, we’re seeking a barrier between his influence and ourselves. - A Prayer for Righteous Offspring
By mentioning “what You may bestow upon us,” we’re acknowledging that children are a gift and blessing from Allah. This phrase expresses our hope and reliance on Allah to grant us children who will be protected from negative influences and grow up to be righteous. It’s a beautiful way to remember that one of our ultimate goals in marriage is to bring up children who will serve as positive members of society and who, inshaAllah, will be close to Allah.
