Breaking Down Each Part of the Dua
- “O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead”:
We begin with a request for Allah’s forgiveness for everyone — those who are still in this world and those who have returned to Him. This first line reminds us that forgiveness is something we all need, no matter where we are on our journey. - “Our young and our old, our male and our female, and our present and our absent”:
This part of the dua includes everyone, regardless of age, gender, or location. It beautifully reflects the inclusive nature of Islam, which values each individual and encourages us to remember both those who are close to us and those who may be far away. - “Whosoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive faithful to Islam”:
Here, we ask Allah to grant those who are still alive a steadfast commitment to Islam, so that our lives are filled with faith, good actions, and sincerity. We’re asking Allah to let us live in a way that pleases Him, with hearts that stay strong in belief. - “Whosoever You cause to die, let him die having Iman (faith)”:
This request is especially significant. Dying with faith (Iman) is a blessing that signifies a successful end to one’s life journey. This part of the dua reflects our hope that Allah will take our loved ones back to Him when they are ready, with faith in their hearts and minds. - “O Allah! Do not deprive us of our reward”:
Losing someone dear to us is a test, and there’s a reward for those who bear this loss with patience and faith. This line is a plea for Allah to grant us that reward and to make our resilience, remembrance, and prayers a source of blessings for us in this life and the next. - “Do not subject us to trials after his death”:
This final part acknowledges the struggles we may face in dealing with loss and asks Allah to protect us from any severe challenges that could shake our faith. It’s a plea for Allah to grant us peace, stability, and strength, even in the face of grief.
