أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ

Transliteration

U’izukuma bikalimatil-lahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘ainin lammah.

The Messenger of Allah SAW used to seek Allah’s protection for Hasan and Husayn by saying [the above]. (Bukhari)

The Messenger of Allah said: “When the evening comes, keep your children in, for the devils come out at that time.

Then when part of the night has passed, let them go. And close the doors and mention the name of Allah, for Shaytan does not open a closed door.

Tie up your waterskins and mention the name of Allah. Cover your vessels, even if you only put something over them and extinguish your lamps.” (Bukhari)

Commenting on the above hadith, Ibn Hajar quotes Ibn al-Jawzi:

At that hour, children are feared because the impurity (najasah) that the devils (shayatin) surround themselves with is commonly found in children. Similarly, children rarely engage in dhikr, which would protect them.

And when the devils spread out, they cling to whatever they can. As a result, children are afraid at that time.”

They spread out at that time because they can move more freely at night than during the day, and darkness is more conducive to the devil forces coming together than any other time.

The correct way to perform dua for your children in order to protect them is indeed what the messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to do for his (grand)sons al Hasan and al Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).

Al-Bukhaari (3371) narrated that Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah for al Hasan and al Husssain, and he said:

“Your father (Ibraaheem) used to seek refuge with (these words) for Ismaa‘eel and Ishaaq:

A‘oodhu bi kalimaat Illaahi’t-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah.

Meaning I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from every devil and every vermin, and from every bad eye)”.

Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari:

The word “haammah (vermin)” refers to poisonous things.

The words “from every bad eye” – al-Khattaabi said: What is meant by this is every disease and ailment that may affect a person of insanity and confusion. End quote.
