Ibn Abbas said, “This is knowledge.”
and join me with the righteous: means, `make me one of the righteous in this world and the Hereafter.’

And grant me an honorable mention in later generations.

Prophet Ibraheem called upon his Lord, saying:
My Lord, grant me knowledge and wisdom that is, a great deal of knowledge, by means of which I may know rulings and what is lawful and what is prohibited, and I may be able to judge between people.
And join me with the righteous, this refers to his fellow Prophets and Messengers.
It also means give me a righteous society to live here in this world and raise me along with the righteous in the Hereafter.
To be raised back to life with the righteous and to attain one’s salvation have one and the same meaning.
Therefore, this should be the dua of every person who believes in the life-after-death and in reward and punishment.
Even in this world a pious man cherishes the desire that Allah should save him from living a life in an immoral and wicked society and should join him with the righteous people.
A pious and righteous person will remain ill at ease and restless until either his own society should become clean and pure morally, or he leaves it to join another society which is practicing and following the principles of truth and honesty.
And grant me an honourable renown among the later nations that is, grant that I may be truly praised until the end of time.
And Allah answered his prayer: He granted him knowledge and wisdom by virtue of which he became one of the best of the Messengers, and He joined him with his fellow Messengers, and He made him beloved, accepted, venerated and praised among the followers of all religions, at all times.
Make me one of the inheritors of the garden of bliss that is, one of the people of paradise, to whom Allah gives it as an inheritance.
Allah answered his prayer and raised him in status in the gardens of bliss.
And destine for me a truthful description among the next generations. The word, (lisan, which literally means tongue) is used in this verse in the sense of description and ‘for me’ means ‘for my benefit.
Thus meaning of the prayer is ‘0 Allah, grant me such delectable ways and nice signs that others may follow until the Dooms Day, and they remember me with good words and nice attributes’.
Allah has accepted the supplication of Sayyidna Ibrahim.
All, including Jews, Christians and even the disbelievers of Makkah, have feelings of love and affection for the creed of Ibrahim and attribute themselves to it.
Although their ways are in conflict with those of Sayyidna Ibrahim, based on infidelity and polytheism, but they claim to be following his ways.
As for the Ummah of the Holy Prophet, they rightly claim to be on the ways of Ibrahim, and feel proud of it.
