(…My Lord, my bones have grown weak and my head glows silver with age, but never, my Lord, has my prayer to You remained unanswered. Verily, I fear [what] my kinsmen [will do] after I am gone, for my wife is barren. Grant unto me by Your grace an heir, who will inherit from me and from the family of Ya‘qoob, and make him, my Lord, one with whom You are pleased.
Maryam, verses 4-6
From these verses, in which we see that he said My Lord, do not leave me childless, we leam that as death approached, he feared that there would be no one to take his place in calling people to Allah and advising the slaves of Allah, for there was no one at his time who was like him in knowledge, and there would be no one to succeed him and carry on the work that he had been doing.
Although You are the best of inheritors that is, the best of those who remain, and the best to do good to people after I am gone, for You are more merciful towards Your slaves than I am, but I want to put my mind at rest and be reassured, and to have ongoing reward for that.
His kinsmen did not care about religion, and he was afraid that after he died, religion would be neglected. So he asked for an heir who would uphold religion after he was gone.
Therefore he asked for someone who would inherit knowledge and prophethood, not wealth, from him. (al-Qurtubi)
According to another Tafsir of this Aya,
And (remember) Zakariyy when he called his Lord, “0 my Lord do not leave me alone and You are the best of inheritors!
So, Allah responded to him and gave him Yahya and made his wife good for him. They used to race towards the good deeds and call Us with hope and fear; and they were humble to Us.
Sayyidna Zakariyya wished for a son and heir for which he prayed to Allah. But at the same time he made it clear that Allah is the, best heir no matter if he had a son or not.
You are the best of inheritors, This was the manifestation of the prophetic respect in that the main concern of the prophets should always be toward Allah, and even if some one else came into focus, their attention should not deviate from the main objective.
And call Us with hope and fear. This may be interpreted to mean that they call Allah both in comfort and distress.
The other explanation of the verse is that during their prayers they remain suspended between hope and fear hoping that Allah would forgive their sins and fearing that their lapses may bring on them His displeasure.
“O my Lord, do not leave me alone.” He secretly implored his Lord, saying, “O my Lord, do not leave me alone without offspring or an heir.”
“And You are the best of inheritors”: Meaning, You are the best one to remain after everyone else dies. This is praise for Allah in His continuity, indicating the perishability of all living beings except Him.
It is also an invocation for His kindness and a plea for what is appropriate, as mentioned by His name, “the Best of Inheritors.”
The usage of the form “khayr” (best) adds emphasis, exaggerating in praise of Allah, showing humility for a favorable response.
Allah, in His glory and majesty, responded to his supplication, blessing him with a righteous prophet named Yahya (peace be upon him) and granting his wife fertility after she was barren.
This demonstrates the perfection of Allah’s power, which is not limited by anything in the heavens or the earth.
