How Many Sajdah in Quran?
There are 15 Sajdah, places of prostrations in the Quran. The Sajdah in the Noble Qur’an are places in some verses in which the Muslim prostrates when reading them because sujud is mentioned in them.
They have special mark in the Quran that distinguishes them from other verses so that the reader can recognize them.
It is a good practice to prostrate at the following places while reciting the Quran.
They are called Sujud tilawa in Islamic terminology.

1. Surah Al Araf verse 206
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِهِ وَيُسَبِّحُونَهُ وَلَهُ يَسْجُدُونَ ۩
Transliteration: Innal lazeena ‘inda Rabbika laa yastakbiroona ‘an ‘ibaadatihee wa yusabbihoonahoo wa lahoo yasjudoon.
Meaning: Indeed, those who are near your Lord [i.e., the angels] are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate.
2. Surah Al Ra’d verse 15
وَلِلَّهِ يَسْجُدُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ طَوْعًا وَكَرْهًا وَظِلَالُهُمْ بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ ۩
Transliteration: Wa lillaahi yasjudu man fis samaawaati wal ardi taw ‘anw wa karhanw wa zilaaluhum bilghuduwwi wal aasaal.
Meaning: And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons.

3. Surah Al Nahl verse 49
وَلِلَّهِ يَسْجُدُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ مِنْ دَابَّةٍ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
Transliteration: Wa lillaahi yasjudu maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ardi min daaabbatinw walma laaa’ikatu wa hum laa yastakbiroon
Meaning: And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.
4. Surah Al Israeel verse 109
وَيَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ يَبْكُونَ وَيَزِيدُهُمْ خُشُوعًا ۩
Transliteration Wa yakhirroona lil azqaani yabkoona wa yazeeduhum khushoo’aa (make sajda)
Meaning: And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Quran] increases them in humble submission.
5. Surah Maryam verse 58
أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّةِ آدَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْرَائِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَاجْتَبَيْنَا ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا ۩
Transliteration: Ulaaa’ikal lazeena an’amal laahu ‘alaihim minan Nabiyyeena min zurriyyati Aadama wa mimman hamalnaa ma’a Noohinw wa min zurriyyati Ibraaheema wa Israaa’eela wa mimman hadainaa wajta bainaaa; izaa tutlaa ‘alaihim Aayaatur Rahmaani kharroo sujjadanw wa bukiyyaa.
Meaning: Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel [i.e., Jacob], and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.
6. Surah Al Hajj verse 18
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَسْجُدُ لَهُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ وَالنُّجُومُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَالشَّجَرُ وَالدَّوَابُّ وَكَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِ الْعَذَابُ ۗ وَمَنْ يُهِنِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ مُكْرِمٍ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ ۩
Transliteration: Alam tara annal laaha yasjudu lahoo man fis samaawaati wa man fil ardi wash shamsu walqamaru wan nu joomu wal jibaalu wash shajaru wad dawaaabbu wa kaseerum minan naasi wa kaseerun haqqa ‘alaihil ‘azaab; wa mai yuhinil laahu famaa lahoo mim mukrim; innallaaha yaf’alu maa yashaaa (make sajda)
Meaning: Do you not see [i.e., know] that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates – for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.
7. Surah Al Hajj 77
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ارْكَعُوا وَاسْجُدُوا وَاعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمْ وَافْعَلُوا الْخَيْرَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ۩
Transliteration: Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanur ka’oo wasjudoo wa’budoo Rabbakum waf’alul khaira la’allakum tuflihoon.
Meaning: O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good – that you may succeed.
8. Surah Al Furqaan verse 60
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اسْجُدُوا لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ قَالُوا وَمَا الرَّحْمَٰنُ أَنَسْجُدُ لِمَا تَأْمُرُنَا وَزَادَهُمْ نُفُورًا ۩
Transliteration: Wa izaa qeela lahumus judoo lir Rahmaani qaaloo wa mar Rahmaanu ‘a nasjudu limaa ta’murunaa wa zaadahum nufooraa.
Meaning: And when it is said to them, “Prostrate to the Most Merciful,” they say, “And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?” And it increases them in aversion.
9. Surah Al Naml verse 25
أَلَّا يَسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ الَّذِي يُخْرِجُ الْخَبْءَ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تُخْفُونَ وَمَا تُعْلِنُونَ
Transliteration: Allaa yasjudoo lillaahil lazee yukhrijul khab’a fis samaawaati wal ardi wa ya’lamu maa tukhfoona wa maa tu’linoon
Meaning: [And] so they do not prostrate to Allah, who brings forth what is hidden within the heavens and the earth and knows what you conceal and what you declare.
10. Surah Al Sajdah ayat 15
إِنَّمَا يُؤْمِنُ بِآيَاتِنَا الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهَا خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَسَبَّحُوا بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ ۩
Transliteration: Innamaa yu’minu bi aayaatinal lazeena izaa zukkiroo bihaa kharroo sujjadanw wa sabbahoo bihamdi rabbihim wa hum laa yastakbiroon
Meaning: Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.
11. Surah Sa’ad ayat 24
قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْخُلَطَاءِ لَيَبْغِي بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُودُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّاهُ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ ۩
Transliteration: Qaala laqad zalamaka bisu ‘aali na’jatika ilaa ni’aajih; wa inna kaseeran minal khulataaa’i la-yabghee ba’duhum ‘alaa ba’din illal lazeena aamanoo wa ‘amilus saalihaati wa qaleelun maa hum; wa zanna Daawoodu annamaa fatannaahu fastaghfara Rabbahoo wa kharra raaki’anw wa anaab.
Meaning: [David] said, “He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds – and few are they.” And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah].
12. Surah Fussilat verse 38
فَإِنِ اسْتَكْبَرُوا فَالَّذِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ يُسَبِّحُونَ لَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْأَمُونَ ۩
Transliteration: Fa inis-takbaroo fallazee na ‘inda Rabbika yusabbihoona lahoo billaili wannnahaari wa hum laa yas’amoon.
Meaning: And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allah, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.
13. Surah Al Najm verse 62
فَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ وَاعْبُدُوا ۩
Transliteration: Fasjudoo lillaahi wa’budoo.
Meaning: So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him].
14. Surah Al Inshiqaq verse 21
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩
Transliteration: Wa izaa quri’a ‘alaihimul Quraanu laa yasjudoon.
Meaning: And when the Quran is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah].
15. Surah Al Alaq verse 19
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِبْ ۩
Transliteration: Kalla; la tuti’hu wasjud waqtarib
Meaning: No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].
The Prophet SAW explained the high significance of sujud Tilawa in the many ways such as
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“When the son of Adam recites a verse of prostration and he prostrates, Satan withdraws and he weeps and he says: Woe to me! The son of Adam was commanded to prostrate and he prostrated, so he will go to Paradise. I was commanded to prostrate and I refused, so I will go to Hellfire.”

When reciting or listening to the Qur’an and on reaching any of these verse it is recommended (according to some scholars obligatory) to perform a single Sajdah.
