The meaning of auzubillah minashaitan nirajeem in English is I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one).

The word (audhu) means ‘I seek protection. The word Shaytan refers to a creation of Allah whose name is Iblees. He is described as being (ar-rajeem) ‘rejected’ ie the one rejected by Allah and distant from His mercy and all good.

Shaytan is an enemy who is more cunning and intelligent than us, he is invisible and has the capacity to incite us from the inside.

To confront such an enemy alone, without the help of a greater power, is a recipe for certain failure. That is why we have to turn to Allah for help.

Seeking refuge with Allah entails turning to Allah for protection against the evil of all evil ones. It is said to keep evil away from a person.

Auzu Billahi Minashaita Nirajeem in Quran

There is one place in the Quran where Audhu Billahi Minashaitanir Rajeem is mentioned. It is in surah An Nahl verse 98. Allah SWT says:

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْانَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

Meaning: So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge with Allah from Shaytan, the outcast.

This is a command from Allah to His servants upon the tongue of His Prophet, telling them that when they want to read Qur’an, they should seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Shaytan.

The reason for seeking refuge with Allah before reading is that the reader should not get confused or mixed up, and that the Shaytan would not confuse him or stop him from thinking about and pondering over the meaning of what he reads.

There are many benefits of reciting this beautiful phrases, among them are:

If you utter it when you are anger, the anger would get out (of the fit of anger).

When you want to recite the Book of Allah, which is the noblest and most sublime of books, in which there is a prescription for spiritual well-being and a great deal of knowledge,

then the Shaytan shows a great deal of interest (in harming a person) when he starts to do righteous deeds, and he tries to divert him from the purpose and goal for which he does those deeds.

The way to keep oneself safe from his evil is to turn to Allah and seek refuge in Him from his evil.

So the reciter should say: A ‘oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytan ir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan), pondering the meaning thereof and relying in his heart upon Allah to divert the Shaytan from him, striving hard to resist his insinuating whispers and bad thoughts, and seeking the strongest means of warding him off, which is resorting to faith and depending on Allah.

For the Shaytan has no power or control over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord alone, with no partner or associate.

Allah wards off from the believers who put their trust in Him the evil of the Shaytan, so he has no power or control over them.

Rather he has power and control only over those who take him as an ally that is, they take him as an ally by turning away from Allah and starting to obey the Shaytan and joining his party.

Therefore they are the ones who make him their ally, then he goads them into committing sin and leads them to the fire.

Where To Read Audhu Billahi Min Ash-shaytan Ir-rajim

There are some times that it is sunnah to say audhu billahi min ash-shaytaan ir-rajeem, among them are:

• Before reciting a portion of the Quran
• When angry;
• If a person has bad thoughts,
• During prayer

There are different ways of saying these dua of seeking refuge with Allah:

A’oodhu Billahi min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan)

A’oodhu Billah as-samee’ il-‘aleem min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan)

A’oodhu Billah as-samee’ il-‘aleem min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem, min hamzihi wa nafkhihi wa nafathihi (I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan, from his suffocation, his arrogance and his poetry)

Hadith On Audhu Billahi

Sulaiman b. Surad reported that two persons abused each other in the presence of Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) and one of them fell into a rage and his face became red. Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) saw him and said:

I know of a wording; if he were to utter that, he would get out (of the fit of anger) (and the wording is): I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed.

Thereupon, a person went to him who had heard that from Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) and said to him: Do you know what Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said? He (the Holy Prophet) said: I know of a wording; if he were to say that, (the fit) would be no more (and the words are): I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed. And the person said to him: Do you find me mad?
