Benefits

According to the Hadith, Allah will spare whoever says this four times in the morning or evening from the fire of Hell.

Reference: Abu Dawud 4/317. It was also reported by Al-Bukhari in Al-‘Adab Al-Mufrad, An-Nasa’i in ‘Amalul-Yawm wal-Laylah and Ibn As-Sunni. Nasa’i’s and Abu Dawud’s chains of transmission are good (Hasan), Ibn Baz, p. 23.

Brief Commentary

  • In the evening, we swap the word أصبحت with أمسيت e. we say “I have entered a new evening…”
  • The Prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said that whoever recites this supplication in the morning, their sins from that day will be forgiven, and whoever recites it in the evening, their sins from that evening will be forgiven.
  • In another narration, the Prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said that whoever recites this supplication once in the morning or evening, Allah will free a quarter of this person from Hellfire. Whoever recites it twice, Allah will free a half this person. Whoever recites it three times, Allah will free three quarters of this person, and whoever recites it four times, Allah will free the whole of this person from Hellfire.
  • The bearers of Allah’s throne are eight Angels, as mentioned by Allah in the Qur’an.
  • The bearers of the throne are a magnificent creation. The Prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said that the distance between the earlobe and the shoulder of one these Angels is like the distance of travelling for 700 years.
  • We testify before Allah, His Angels, and all of His creation that there is none worthy of worship but Him, with no partners, and that Muhammad (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is His slave and Messenger. Everyone we meet is from the creation of Allah, so we cannot verbally pronounce this testimony, yet hide our beliefs from others.
