This dua was mentioned in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, but with a weak chain of narrators, which means is not authentic from the sunnah of our beloved Prophet SAW.

There are numerous and authentic supplications narrated from the Messenger, may peace be upon him, in many places, dua before sleeping and before eating, Dua before and after going out, Dua for visiting the sick and visiting the graves, dua before wearing clothes as well as supplication before and after riding.

All these supplications were narrated from the Prophet, may peace be upon him.

However, if a person have to entrust himself with a special supplication, he should supplicate whatever supplications he wants within the limits of his ability.

Any supplication, in Sha Allah, will be answered by Allah, as long as a person is eating from what is halal (permissible), wears from what is permissible, and spends from what is permissible.

The supplications are not prohibited, and it is permissible for you to supplicate with them in prayer or outside it.

The worshiper, or anyone else, has the right to supplicate for what he loves from the goodness of this world and the hereafter.

It came in the explanation of Al-Khurashi on the Mukhtasar Khalil Al-Maliki: Where it is permissible to supplicate, the person praying supplicates for what he loves from whatever is possible from other matters or this world, such as the expansion of one’s livelihood, and a good wife.

And if a person is perplexed in taking action or reluctance, and it is not clear to him what is correct in what he wants to do or leave, then the Sunnah is to ask Allah for help, and entrust the matter of goodness to Him.

When it comes to Istikhara, it is only permissible to recite what is authentic from the sunnah. This is not a short Dua for Istikhara as others claimed.
