The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: When a man goes out of his house and says: “In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah,” the following will be said to him at that time: “You are guided, defended and protected.” The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?

(Sunan Abi Dawood; No. [5095]).

Why Saying This Du’a is Important?

Allah has made it a Sunnah (practice) for us Muslims to say du’as before we leave our homes.

We are not only required to say du’as when we embark on a journey but also upon waking up in the morning, going to bed at night, starting a new business venture or project, undertaking something important (e.g., buying property), taking an exam or being tempted by one’s base desires.

In all these situations we need Allah’s help if we are going to succeed.

This is why He has commanded us to say these supplications when leaving our homes so that He will cover us with His protection.

Every day a Muslim goes out of his home to carry out the work and responsibilities related to him.

Whenever you leave the house, you are meeting or exposed to dealing with different groups of people.

For this reason, it is from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may peace be upon him, that he would stand with himself before leaving his house, asking Allah to guide and protect him, so that he would not harm anyone, nor be harmed by anyone, and would not be wronged by anyone, nor would he be subjected to injustice by anyone.

Benefits Of Reciting Dua For Leaving House

The supplication for leaving the house, like other supplications, carries with it great reliance on Allah and has a lot of benefits.

Relying on Allah and leaving your matter to Him in what the Muslim will face during his day while he is outside the house to fulfill his private and public affairs, and among those benefits that accrue to him as a result of persevering in repeating this supplication before setting out of the house.

  • Protection and prevention from misguidance, wrongdoing, injustice and ignorance towards others, and at the same time, protection from the infliction of any of them on him.
  • Satan distance himself from the one who remembers supplication and keeping him away from his path.
  • Obtaining guidance, success, sufficiency and protection from God Almighty.
  • Delegating the matter to God Almighty and reliance on Him, which entails giving the Muslim the best of that out, and sufficing him from its evil on all levels. Reward from Allah SWT in the hereafter.
  • Doing an action that Allah loves and multiplies the reward for it.

Let us strive to revive this beautiful Sunnah, by applying it and asking people to it, so that we may gain the virtues that result from it, and gain the reward of reviving one of the Sunnahs of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
