Tafsir Of This Ayah
Tafsir As Sa’adi
Do not turn your face away from people [in contempt]} that is, do not frown at people out of arrogance towards them, looking down on them.
[and do not walk on the earth with insolence) that is, with arrogance, feeling proud because of the blessings that have been bestowed upon you whilst forgetting the Bestower, and being filled with self admiration.
(Verily Allah does not love anyone who is conceited) in the way he thinks of himself and carries himself ([and boastful) in his speech.
English – Tafsir Jalalayn
And do not turn your cheek disdainfully from people (tusa
`ir: a variant reading has tusir) do not turn your face away in disdain, and do not walk upon the earth exultantly, in other words, with haughtiness.
Truly God does not like any swaggering braggart, strutting in his step, [boasting] in front of people.
English – Tafsir ibn kathir
And turn not your face away from men with pride, means, `do not turn your face away from people when you speak to them or they speak to you, looking down on them in an arrogant fashion.
Rather be gentle towards them and greet them with a cheerful face,’ as it says in the Hadith:
Even if it is only by greeting your brother with a cheerful countenance.
And beware of letting your lower garment trail below your ankles, for this is a kind of boasting, and Allah does not like boasting.
Nor walk in insolence through the earth. means, `do not be boastful, arrogant, proud and stubborn. Do not do that, for Allah will hate you.’
So he said: Verily, Allah likes not any arrogant boaster. Meaning, one who shows off and admires himself, feeling that he is better than others.
