اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لاَ مَلْجَأَ وَلاَ مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلاَّ إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ

Transliteration/Pronunciation

The dua is transliterated as All-ahumma aslamtu nafsi ilaika, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilaika, wa fauwadtu `Amri ilaika, wa alja’tu zahri ilaika, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika. La Malja’a wa la manja minka illa ilaika. Amantu bikitabika al-ladhi anzalta wa nabiyyika al-ladhi arsalta.

Hadith

Al-Bara bin ‘Azib RA reported: The Messenger of Allah SAW said, “Whenever you intend to go to bed, perform Wudu’ as is done for Salat (prayer); and then lie down on the right side and recite:

‘Allaahumma aslamtu nafsi ilaika, wa fawwadtu amri ilaika, wal- ja’tu zahri ilaika, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la malja’a wa la manja minka illa ilaika, amantu bikitabik-alladhi anzalta, wa binabiyyik-alladhi arsalta

[O Allah! I have submitted myself to You. I have turned my face to You, entrusted my affairs to You and relied completely on You out of desire for and fear of You (expecting Your reward and fearing Your punishment). There is no resort and no deliverer from (hardships) except You. I affirm my faith in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent].’

If you die during the night, you will die in the true religion. Let these words be your last words at night.”

Amongst the etiquette of sleeping is to recite the Adkar (word of remembrance of Allah) as the Prophet SAW said and commanded it.

In essence, make this Remembrance of Al-Baraa bin ‘Aazib the last thing you say.

The Prophet SAW commanded Al-Baraa to repeat this Remembrance to him and he did so saying: ‘wa bi rasulika alladhi arsalta (and in your Messenger you have sent).’

The Prophet SAW thereupon said: ‘No! Say: ‘wa nabiyyika alladhi arsalta’ (and in your Prophet you have sent),’ and do not say: ‘wa bi rasulika alladhi arsalta’ (and in your Messenger).’

According to Sheikh Uthaimeen in the book, explanation of Riyaddus Saliheen, the people of knowledge said: ‘This is because the word ‘Messenger,’ is used for both the human Messenger and the angel Messenger.

You are thus expected to memorize this Remembrance, say it when you lie on your beds and make it the last thing you say in adherence to the command, guidance and the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW- This is one of the etiquettes of sleeping.

His saying, “…and I entrust my affairs to you” and his saying, “There is no refuge nor place of safety from You but with You.”

Actual reliance is when the individual entrusts his entire affairs to his Lord. He would not seek refuge or protection from Allah but with Allah – the Mighty and Sublime.

Because if He – the Exalted – wills to send down His punishment upon a group of people, none can prevent that, and if Allah – the Exalted – wills anything for someone, no one can stop that except Allah – the Mighty and Sublime.
