Surah Al-Hashr, verse 59:22-24

Start your dua with praising and glorifying Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala.

The Messenger of Allah SAW once heard a person making dua during one of the prayers. The man did not glorify Allah nor invoke salat upon the prophet of Allah SAW. The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said the man was too hasty.

The Messenger called the man and said:

When one of you makes dua (supplication, prayer), he should start off with praising and glorifying Allah, and should then send salat on the Prophet. Then he should make dua for whatever he wishes.

(Abu Dawud)

In another narration, the Messenger of Allah SAW said:

“There is none who likes to be praised more than Allah does.”

(Bukhari)

Praising Allah is one of the most commendable acts you can perform. The prophet SAW told us that the best words a slave can utter after the Qur’an are the words of praise and glory. (Ahmad)

Praising Allah is the only worship that will be performed by the people of Paradise; and will be the manner in which they ask from Allah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Their call therein will be ‘how Perfect You are, O Allah and their greeting therein will be (Salam) peace and the end of their call will be ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.”

(Surah 10: verse10)

In the Steps of the teaching of Prophets

When you reflects on the duas in the Qur’an made by the Prophets of Allah, you marvel at the courtesy, humility and shyness and which shines through their words.

Each dua is a deep intimacy with their Lord and testimony to their awareness of. Rather than rushing to make their requests, they praised Allah, glorified Him, and asked Allah through His Most Perfect Names.

We see this in the majority of duas of the Messenger of Allah SAW.

The sahih hadith of intercession mentions that the believers will ask various Prophets to intercede for them to Allah. Upon their refusal, they will approach the prophet SAW who will be given permission to present Himself before Allah. He SAW would say:

When he see His Lord, he will fall down in prostration before Him and Allah will leave him in prostration as long as He wishes.

And then Allah would say to him, O Muhammad! Raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to; and ask, for you will be granted your request; and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted.’

The Messenger SAW will then raise his head and praise His Lord with certain praises which Allah has taught Him, and then the prophet will intercede.”

(Bukhari)

Thus the messenger of Allah special praise of His Lord will be a means for his intercession to be accepted.

The angels have also shown us how to make dua by praising our Lord. Before asking for forgiveness for those who have repented and followed Your way they started their dua by saying:

Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge…’

Surah 40: verse7.

Though many of us regularly make dua, we fail to use this special gift of praising Allah.

Sadly it does not spring from your hearts as it should because you have failed to recognize and know Allah as He deserves to be known.

Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala also says:

‘They did not hold Allah in His true esteem.’

(Quran 39: verse 67)

When we recognise the grandeur, greatness, and glory of Allah, our praises for Him will flow easily and naturally.

How can we praise Allah?

First, you should praise Him as He has praised Himself. This is the best way to praise Allah. This can be learnt by reciting the Holy Qur’an, reflecting upon it and forming a strong connection with it, since it is replete with the Allah praising Himself.

  1. Praise Him as our beloved Messenger SAW praised Him. Of Allah’s creation, none surpassed him in knowing Him and appreciating Him as He ought to be.

2. Praise Him with words used by the sahabas, companions (radiy Allahu anhum) and the pious predecessors.

3. Praise Him with your own words emanating from the heart, so long as it does not contradict sound beliefs.

4. One of the best ways of praising Allah is through His Beautiful Names.

“The best slaves of Allah on the Day of Judgement will be those who frequently praise Him.” (Tirmidhī)
