In Surah A’araf, Allah mentioned the story of prophet Isa and his followers.

The meaning of this Dua (Aya) According to Ibn Sa’adi, When prophet Isa heard that and understood their intention, he responded to their request by saying:

O Allah our Lord, send down to us from heaven a table [spread with food], so that it might be a festival for us, for all our generations present and future, and a sign from You, that is, so that the time of its descent may be a festival and special occasion, commemorating this great sign, so that it will be remembered and not forgotten with the passage of time.

By the same token, Allah has made the festivals and special occasions of the Muslims a commemoration of His signs and a reminder of the way of the Messengers, their straight path and His bounty and grace towards them. dand grant us provision.

For You are the best of providers that is, make it provision for us.

Prophet Isa asked for it to be sent down so that it would serve these two purposes: the religious purpose of being an abiding sign and the worldly purpose of bringing provision.

Allah said: I will send it down to you, but if anyone among you disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment the like of which I will never inflict upon anyone else in the world because he is witnessing this marvellous sign, yet he disbelieves out of stubbornness and wrongdoing; thus he deserves the painful punishment and severe consequences.

It should be understood that although Allah promised to send it down, and He issued this warning to them if they did not believe, He did not say that He sent it down.

It may be that He did not send it down because they decided not to choose that.

This is indicated by the fact that there is no mention of it in the Gospel that the Christians have.

Or it may be that it was sent down as Allah promised, for Allah does not break His promises, and the fact that it is not mentioned in the Gospel that they have is because it was part of the portion that they forgot.

Or it may be that it was not mentioned in the Gospel at all; rather that was something that was passed down verbally from one generation to another, therefore there was no need for Allah to mention it in the Gospel.

This interpretation is supported by the words and to be witnesses thereof verse 113.

And Allah knows best exactly what happened.
