Is Frog Halal To Eat?

No, frog is not halal. It is not permitted to eat frogs because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade killing them, as is reported in the hadith of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Uthman, who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the killing of frogs.

(Narrated by Imam Ahmad and Ibn Majah; see also Sahih al-Jami’, 6970).

The rule is that everything which we are forbidden to kill, we are not allowed to eat; if we are allowed to eat it we are allowed to kill it.

According to the view of many scholars, it is forbidden to eat the meat of the frog.

Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him said in Al-Mughni:

“‘All that is hunted from the sea is permissible to eat, except for the frog.’ ‘And this is also the view of Ash-Shaafi’i.'” [End of quote]

He also said:

“As for the frog: ‘The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) forbade killing it.’ [An-Nasaa’i] This indicates that it is forbidden.” [End of quote]

Frog is not Halal according to the Hanafi Madhab. When it comes to marine animals only fish is permitted.

Narrated AbdurRahman ibn Uthman: When a physician consulted the Prophet (ﷺ) about putting frogs in medicine, he forbade him to kill them. Abu Dawood 3871, Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani).

The Hadith above provides specific evidence for the prohibition of frog. However, the general principle in the Hanafi Madhab also serves as evidence for such a prohibition.

The understanding of the Hanafi Madhhab is that the Quran and Hadith only permits fish (Samak) when it comes to marine animals. Frog does not look like a fish so is therefore prohibited.
